Jules et Jim and Jeanne Moreau29 May 2008
Jeanne Moreau
Why was Jeanne Moreau’s role in this iconic French film so significant?

At the start of the 1960s, the French New Wave brought about a revolution in film making by throwing off the ideas and practices of the past. One of the most iconic films of the “Nouvelle Vague” was Jules et Jim, directed by Francois Truffaut and starring Jeanne Moreau as Catherine. Catherine was a revelation to many cinema goers - she was a woman who followed her own desires, she was loved simultaneously by two men and she combined both intelligence and beauty. As the film opens again in cinemas nationwide, Woman's Hour takes a look at the significance of Catherine, her legacy today and the place of actress Jeanne Moreau in the world of cinema.

La Moreau: A Biography of Jeanne Moreau by Marianne Gray is published by Time Warner, ISBN-13: 978-0751514759
