Attitudes to fertility

A Woman's Hour special

One in seven couples now has trouble conceiving and IVF only works in a quarter of cases. Does the value which society places on motherhood make it harder to accept infertility? Does modern medicine’s ability to find ways around infertility add to the stigma felt by those who are unable to have children? And what impact does the failure to conceive have on a woman's life?

Guests:
Gillian Lockwood, Medical Director of Midland Fertility Services
Karen Throsby, Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Warwick
Geeta Nargund, Consultant Gynaecologist at St George's Hospital
Danny Dorling, Professor of Human Geography at Sheffield University
Ann Robinson, GP
Nigel and Nicola Dawson, expecting twins
