The Can Can
150 Years of the Can Can

A hundred and fifty years ago one of the most famous pieces of music was performed for the first time. The famous Galop from Offenbach’s ‘Orpheus in The Underworld’ is immortalised as The Can Can. The dance itself is much older and was originally performed by men. Over a period of a hundred years it was re-invented as a dance for women. Perhaps surprisingly the famous French can can was actually invented by the British and the Americans. Jenni is joined by David Price, Author of ‘Cancan’ and by Michelle Porter & Mandy Kenward from Can Can Boheme.

‘Cancan’ by David Price is published by Cygnus Arts ISBN; 1 900541 50 5
