History
Mr Selfridge19 Oct 2007
A history of shopping and seduction

Selfridges department store opened on London’s Oxford Street in 1909. The palatial design, range of in-house services and magnificent window displays were something that had never been seen in Britain before. Its creator was Harry Gordon Selfridge, a philanderer, gambler and a maverick retailer of enormous charm.

Jane talks to Lindy Woodhead about Harry’s life, his impact on consumerism and the part he played in changing the role of women in society.

Shopping, Seduction and Mr Selfridge by Lindy Woodhead is published by Profile Books: ISBN 978-1-86197-888-2

Shopping, Seduction and Mr Selfridge is the Radio 4 'Book of the Week' beginning on Monday 22 October.
