Caring for sick babies; a new report says the service is near breaking point.

A report from the premature baby charity, BLISS, says that neonatal services in Britain are on the brink of collapse. One hundred and ninety five units took part in a survey – many are described as being ‘near breaking point’, and are forced to refuse new admissions. This means that mothers and babies may have to travel long distances in search of another facility. Over half of the most specialist units struggle to reach even fifty per cent adequate nursing levels. BLISS is now asking the government to ensure the service is better funded, and more neonatal nurses are recruited. Andy Cole, Chief Executive of BLISS joins Jenni to discuss the current crisis.
