The Australian author on her books and why her homeland is such an inspiration.

One of Australia’s most successful writers, Kate Grenville is used to winning awards. She won the Orange prize for Fiction with her novel “Idea of Perfection” and was short listed for the Mann Booker Prize with her novel “The Secret River”. This last novel was spawned from her desire to discover her heritage that started with the convict Solomon Wiseman, her great-great-great-grandfather being sent to Australia in 1806. She tells Jane Little about her journey into her family’s past and why her homeland features so strongly in her writing.
