Josephine Butler and Angela Burdett Coutts27 Dec 2006
Angela Burdett Coutts by kind permission of The British Library (Manuscript No. 10604.g.10 Vol. II Pg515) and Josephine Butler by kind permission of The Women's Library
Two of the most eminent philanthropists of the nineteenth century, Josephine Butler (b.1828) and Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts (b. 1814) died on the same day, December 30th 1906. Angela was a banking heiress who used her fortune to promote social causes such as building model housing estates, endowing schools for fallen girls and providing drinking fountains for dogs. Josephine caused scandal and controversy through her work with prostitutes and campaigning for the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts.

To learn more about these two significant Victorians, Jenni is joined by Edna Healey, author of ‘Lady Unknown: The Life of Angela Burdett-Coutts’ and Dr Jane Jordon, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Kingston University and the author of a biography of Josephine Butler.
