Audra McDonald has won four Tony awards for her performances on Broadway, three before the age of 30. Not bad for someone who only started performing in order to help her childhood hyperactivity. She was only the second American to be a soloist at the Last Night of the Proms and earlier this year she made her operatic debut with a one woman double bill at the Houston Grand opera. She tells Martha why for her latest album, Build a Bridge, she has yet again changed musical direction by recording songs written by the likes of Elvis Costello and Rufus Wainwright.
