'Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety’, so says Anthony’s chief aide, Enobarbus, in Shakespeare’s Anthony and Cleopatra. But how often are we exposed to images of older women?
The actor Harriet Walter, has curated a photographic exhibition to celebrate the ageing female face. Called ‘Infinite Variety’, there are 40 images of women aged between 48 and 95, including such famous faces as Judi Dench and Charlotte Rampling, to the not so famous: friends, friends of friends and people spotted in the street.
Harriet, who is playing Cleopatra in the forthcoming Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Anthony and Cleopatra joins Martha to discuss why we should learn to love the personality and individuality of etched lines, grey and silver hair and saggy pouches.
