Sovereign Ladies15 Nov 2006
Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth is going to Westminster this morning for the State opening of Parliament. She goes there as only the sixth woman in English history to have been crowned and anointed Queen. Traditionally society has treated men as the natural rulers but six women in history have reigned in Britain in their own right. How did these six manage to confront the sceptics, and balance society’s traditional roles for women – of wife and mother, with the responsibilities of a monarch? Jenni talks to Maureen Waller, the author of a new book ‘SovereignLadies'.

'Sovereign ladies: The Six Reigning Queens of England', by Maureen Waller is published by John Murray, ISBN: 0-7195-6628-2.
