Women in Revolutionary France
Robespierre, Marat, Danton... we are all familiar with the men who fought the cause of liberté, egalité and fraternité , but there were also women who shaped the course of La Révolution.
The Romantic writer, Germaine de Staël helped to draft the 1791 Constitution at her salon, where she entertained the great thinkers of the age. At the other end of the social scale, Pauline Leon patrolled the streets of Paris inciting the citizenry against tyranny. And, it was another woman, Teresia Tallien, who engineered Robespierre's downfall.
Jenni talks to the historian Lucy Moore about her latest book.
Liberty: the lives and times of six women in Revolutionary France is published by Harper Collins ISBN: 0-00-720601-8 | |
