 | | | | Butlins and the Changing Face of the Family Holiday | 18 July 2006 | | |
In 1936 Billy Butlin opened his first holiday camp at Skegness. Seventy years later three Butlins resorts are still welcoming thousands of holidaymakers every year.
However, the annual holiday has undergone many changes since Butlin put an affordable holiday within the reach of the average family. From package holidays on the Costa del Sol in the seventies to middle class decampments to Tuscany in the 1990s, families have become ever more adventurous.
But with the rise of activity centres and the re-branding of camps such as Butlins - is the holiday camp making a comeback?
Joining Jenni to discuss the changing family holiday are writer Jan Etherington and Michael Collins, author of a forthcoming history of the British holiday camp.
