Music
Lila Downs, Mexican singer17 Apr 2006
Lila Downs
Mexican singer Lila Downs is renowned for her resemblance to Frida Kahlo, her striking traditionally-inspired clothing, and the emotional vibrancy of her voice.

She's now recognised as one of the finest folk musicians in the world, singing not only in English and Spanish, but in rarer Mexican languages.

Lila performs some songs from her new album which is her interpretation of traditional "cancion ranchera" ballads about heartache, love and longing that you might hear in a local bar. They include songs which celebrate women who cook the rich and spicey Mexican mole and a story about a woman who leaves her village to become a table dancer in the city and gets involved with drugs trafficking.

Peg Lila Down's new album is called "La Cantina: Entre Copa y Copa".
