 | | | | Male menopause: myth or curse of the middle-aged man? | 10 Apr 2006 | | |
It is sometimes used as an excuse for middle-aged men to buy a motorbike or ditch their wives, but experts continue to debate whether or not the male menopause really exists. Supporters claim symptoms such as tiredness, irritability and lack of sex drive can be triggered by falling levels of the hormone testosterone in older men, with the condition affecting as many as 60% of men in their 60s. However, others argue that the so called 'andropause' affects a tiny number of men, and that the long term consequences of testosterone replacement treatment are not known and could be risky.
Dr Malcolm Carruthers and Dr Antti Perheentupa join Jenni to discuss if this is a real health issue for men or just a myth to medicalise the natural process of ageing.
