Operatic comic characters04 Apr 2006
People often think of opera as being full of woe, war and death, with the tragic heroine dying of a broken heart or consumption. But there are also some wonderful comic characters - Helen in Offenbach's La Belle Helene, who is considered to be the most beautiful woman in the world, Rosina from Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Lady Billows in Benjamin Britten's opera Albert Herring.

Jenni talks to Dame Felicity Lott, who is playing Helen at the English National Opera and Professor John Deathridge about the amusing women in opera.

La Belle Helene: April 3, 6, 8, 13, 19, 21 & 27 and May 4, 6, 11, 13 (early start 6.30pm), 17 & 19 at 7.30pm at the ENO

The English National Opera
