From early in her life, Rebecca Miller has had to come to terms with the fact that she will always be known as the daughter of the famous American playwright Arthur Miller. But now she is receiving attention for her own work. Her latest film is The Ballad of Jack and Rose, which she both wrote and directed. It explores the close bond between a terminally ill man and his teenage daughter, who live a remote and secluded hippy lifestyle together on an island off the American mainland. The film has already provoked comment in the press, not just because it contains hints of incest, but also because Miller has cast her husband, Daniel Day Lewis, in the leading male role.
Martha Kearney talks to the couple about what inspired the film and what it was like for the two of them to work so closely together on the same project. | |
