It's four o'clock, and the children come home from school. They claim to be starving, and raid the biscuit tin and the cupboard for those unhealthy crisps and snacks.
At a time when childhood obesity is on the rise, snacking is not a good idea. And lying behind the after school snack is the broader issue of the decline of the traditional family mealtime. Children are increasingly eating what they want, when they want.
Between 4 and 7pm, is a difficult time for parents – the gap between school and their return from home. But is after-school hunger symbolic of a hunger for parental attention? If so, what can parents do about it, at least in culinary terms?
