Punk is said to have produced a larger number of influential female artists than almost any other pop movement.
But women’s involvement in punk reflects its irreconcilable contradictions; whilst they often rejected a feminist agenda, the traditional emphasis in pop music on attractiveness and glamour, and a sweet and sexy sound was outrightly challenged or playfully undermined.
