British taxpayers have lost a "catastrophic" £8.4bn to VAT fraudsters in 12 months, according to the results of a report obtained by Panorama.
Britain is losing more money to VAT fraudsters than any other country in the European Union - that's according to research by the Belgium government's anti-fraud unit. The figures, obtained by Panorama, claim VAT fraud cost the Treasury £8.4 billion in the year to June 2006. That's five times more than the second most affected country, Spain. So what do the figures mean for the British taxpayer?
You can listen to Justin Rowlatt, who first broke the story on VAT fraud on Panorama in July, reporting on the scale of the problem or shadow paymaster general Mark Francois by clicking on the links on the right hand side of the page.
