During the Falklands War, serving troops did not enjoy the luxury of being able communicate with home rapidly through email and cellphones. Instead they relied on pen and paper. We're following the events of 25 years ago through the letters of Rear Admiral John Lippiett and his wife Jenny.

John Lippiett was a 33 year-old Lieutenant Commander at the time and was second-in-command aboard the Royal Navy Type-21 frigate HMS Ambuscade.

John Lippiett

His young wife Jenny and two children
Louisa ("Wee") and Marc ("Bee") remained
at home in Westbourne, West Sussex. At
the time the letters were written, Jenny
was expecting a third child, whom the
couple nicknamed "Alfonso".

They have published their letters in a book
"War and Peas - Intimate Letters from the
Falklands War 1982." Their aim was to
reflect the everyday human side of those
involved in war, and their sentiments of
25 years ago will resonate with thousands
of service families today. The couple
have been reading the letters for us to
broadcast.
