Historical Places in Britain

As part of our debate on the teaching of history in schools we are travelling around Britain in search of sites of historical resonance. Below are the landmarks nominated so far:

Monday 21st August
Stamford Bridge near York, where in 1066 King Harold defeated an invading Viking army, just a fortnight before he was himself defeated at the Battle of Hastings.

Tuesday 22nd August
St Michael's Abbey in Farnborough, the burial site of Napoleon III.

Wednesday 23rd August
Eyam in Derbyshire - the village that sealed itself off from the outside world when it was struck by the Black Death in the seventeenth century.

Clifford Tower in York, scene of the massacre of 150 Jews in the 12th century.
