Its a cold, damp Autumn morning when a group of villagers emerge from their huts in the kingdom of Mercia and stumble through the Autumn mist towards the north end of the village. Here, they have chosen a site for their new pond - required to meet the needs of the expanding village. After digging the pond, the villagers wait for the autumn rains to fill the large hole they have shaped out of the earth. They don't have to wait long. Then comes the winter and the pond freezes over. A mallard which falls asleep on the ice finds itself an easy target for a hungry fox. The winter is long and hard, but spring brings a new arrival to the pond: a frog , and then another and another ....
