The Red Squirrel Angela Brown lives in the quiet village of Whitfield in Northumberland, and for the past 17 years she has encouraged red squirrels to come to her bird table, leaving food for them. On any one occasion, Angela can watch as many as 12-15 red squirrels feeding out of the food hopper. Standing in her sitting room looking out at the bushy-tailed visitors, it's hard to believe that the red squirrel is now a rare sight in England; the populations having declined drastically over the past 100 years. Today, Northumberland is one of the last strongholds for the red squirrel. The reason for the decline in numbers and range? The encroachment of the grey squirrel. Brett Wetswood visits Angela in her home, to watch the greedy visitors, before joining Jason Reynolds, a full-time Red Squirrel Conservation Officer in a nearby conifer forest to learn how a new approach to forest management could help save our native red squirrels from extinction.
