TOPICS

Energy Review
Home Planet receives several emails and letters from listeners wanting to make their homes more energy efficient or use new technology to generate their own energy. The panel discussed whether or not the recent Energy Review is helpful to these ends?

Comprehensive information on the Energy Review can be found at the Department for Trade and Industry website.

BBC News' Fuelling the Future provides background to the issues the Energy Review is trying to tackle and some of the technologies that might be used.

Further information for individual householders can be found at the following websites:
Energy Advice Centres

Help with installation and suppliers can be found at:
ClearSkies website
Low Carbon Buildings Programme

Information about solar energy products can be found at the Low Carbon Buildings Programme website.

Detailed information about the Government's plans for micro generation can be found at the DTI Energy website

Horse Chestnut Leaf miner
First discovered in Wimbledon in 2002, this moth is causing significant damage to horse chestnuts throughout southern England, however it is important to note that trees are not being killed.

Detailed information about its spread can be had from the Forestry Commission - Forest Research website.

There is also an EU project, CONTROCAM, on the control of Leaf Miners

Useful photographs can be found at the invasive species website

Salt Water Flush
Home Planet listener Barrie Davey makes the case for using salt water to flush our toilets to help save fresh water. He argues that 2/3rds of water entering the average household is wasted each time we flush the toilet. Salt water has been used in ships and is currently used in Hong Kong too, so why not the UK which is surrounded by salt water?

All three panellists believed that Barrie's ideas were impractical on a large scale. They would entail huge investment in infrastructure to get salt water to individual homes; there would be problems with corrosion and scaling and, most importantly, problems in the way that domestic sewage is treated as bacteria behave differently in salt water.

Nile Perch
What have been the ecological and socio-economic implications of the introduction of this fish into Lake Victoria?
