Salt Water Flush Home Planet listener Barrie Davey makes the case for using salt water to flush our toilets to help save fresh water. He argues that 2/3rds of water entering the average household is wasted each time we flush the toilet. Salt water has been used in ships and is currently used in Hong Kong too, so why not the UK which is surrounded by salt water?
All three panellists believed that Barrie's ideas were impractical on a large scale. They would entail huge investment in infrastructure to get salt water to individual homes; there would be problems with corrosion and scaling and, most importantly, problems in the way that domestic sewage is treated as bacteria behave differently in salt water.
