Magpies

I've lived near Rochdale for nearly six years and have noticed during this time that whereas the magpie population keeps increasing, the general bird population keeps declining. I suspect that magpies massacre smaller birds at least as much as cats do. I've seen them attacking blackbirds nests. I'm not sure if they're going for eggs or baby blackbirds.Is my observation mistaken?
