PARKINSON'S DISEASE
Parkinson's disease, the chronic neurological condition linked with ageing, was first described in 1817 by James Parkinson who recorded six patients with involuntary tremors, lessened muscular power and a propensity to bend forwards. Since then, other signs such as balance problems, a general slowness of movement and decreased facial expression, have become associated with the disease.
The legendary boxer Muhammad Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease over twenty years ago. Raj Persaud is joined by Muhammad Ali's daughter, Rasheda Ali , who has just written a children's guide to the condition; Mary Baker , President of the European Parkinson's Disease Association and Nicholas Wood , Professor of Clinical Neurogenetics at University College London. They discuss how families and loved ones live with and are affected by the condition, and survey the recent research progress and the latest treatments available.
INTER-GENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
All In The Mind continues its exploration of the ageing process. Raj Persaud discussesthe knock-on effects of the increase in life expectancy for inter-generational relationships with Jane Garner , Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist, and Dr Sarah Harper , Director of The Oxford Insitute of Ageing and hears listeners' personal experiences.
EATING DISORDERS
Some of the latest approaches in both diagnosis and treatment of Anorexia Nervosa are being discussed this week at an International Conference on Eating Disorders in London. Research scientists in the UK, Canada, Australia and Norway have been exploring the relationship between eating disorders and the brain for the last decade, using brain imaging and neuro-psychological testing.
Now a brain malfunction has been identified which appears to predate the onset of Anorexia Nervosa. Raj Persaud talks to Bryan Lask , Co-convenor of the Conference and Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at St George's Hospital Medical School in London. Professor Lask explains the nature of this brain malfunction that he and his team have discovered.
