By 1553 it was obvious that Edward VI was dying. Mary was the rightful successor but she was a Catholic - Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen by Northumberland but the Privy Council supported Mary. Northumberland was executed, Lady Jane Grey and her husband were sent to the Tower.

EDWARD VI (1537-1553)

• Became King of England and Ireland in 1547
• The son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour
• His tutors were reformists and included Roger Ascham, John Cheke, Richard Cox and Anthony Cooke all of whom were Protestant sympathisers
• His uncle Edward Seymour acted as Lord Protector and became the Duke of Somerset
• Appalled at the thought of Mary, a Catholic, succeeding him
• Plotted with John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne
• Died of tuberculosis in 1553

Lady Jane Grey's grandmother was Mary Tudor, Henry VIII's sister.
