Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have recently died. This week: John Profumo, Ivor Cutler, John La Rose and John Junkin.
John Profumo has died aged 91

The politician whose career ended in scandal with the Christine Keeler affair.

Frank Field MP explains Profumo's role in persuading Chamberlain to stand aside for Churchill to lead Britain in the Second World War and the Executive Director of Toynbee Hall, Luke Geoghegan, describes working alongside John Profumo for charities in the East End.

Ivor Cutler
Scotch performer who has died aged 83.

Matthew Bannister explores the career of Ivor Cutler - the poet, singer and storyteller who was championed by John Peel, performed alongside Robert Wyatt and Van Morrison and appeared in the Beatles film Magical Mystery Tour.

Piers Plowright choses a selection of radio moments from Ivor Cutler's prolific output.
John La Rose
Poet and political activist who has died aged 78.

Having arrived in Britain from Trinidad in 1961, John La Rose established the Caribbean artists movement and the first Caribbean publishing house in Britain 'New Beacon Books'. He used this as a base for encouraging the community around him to campaign upon a range of issues including policing policy and for a more inclusive education system. He set up the George Padmore supplementary school and ran it in his own home to begin with.

His son Michael La Rose, the publisher Margaret Busby and Gus John, former head of Education in Hackney and a director of the George Padmore Institute, met Matthew Bannister at the Institute above the New Beacon bookshop in North London.

John Junkin
Comedy veteran who has died aged 76

A selection of radio and television programme excerpts illustrate the career of actor and writer John Junkin.
