The CIA and the Avant-Garde?

Tuesday 26 September 2006 13:30-14:00 (Radio 4 FM)

Tommy Pearson travels to the German city of Darmstadt to help celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Internationalen Ferienkursen für Neue Musik - one of the most notoriously avant-garde music festivals in the world.

But there are rumours that in the late 40s and early 50s, this radical festival, run by leftist composers, was covertly funded by the CIA! With composer and former Darmstadt composition tutor Christopher Fox at his side, Tommy attempts to make sense of the murky worlds of avant-garde music and the cultural Cold War.
