Tuesday 21 November 2006 13:30-14:00 (Radio 4 FM)

Repeated: Saturday 25 November 2006 15:30-16:00 (Radio 4 FM)

Huw Edwards uncovers the history and social context behind operas.

A comedy of sexual politics set amongst the Olympian gods, Handel's Semele is based on a libretto by William Congreve. It combines some of the most beautiful music Handel ever wrote with biting insights into lust, marital infidelity and the gold-digging methods of Princess Semele, a mortal who has set her sights on seducing the King of the Gods.
