Tricia Barnett's e-mail about the recent London Marathon got us going on the subject of random photography... Tricia and her husband drove down from Nottingham in the hope of seeing their youngest son, Duncan, compete in the event and having arrived in the capital, headed for Tower Bridge in the hope of spotting Duncan as he pounded by. Tricia hadn’t been to the Marathon before and soon realised that the sheer number of runners and spectators would make seeing her boy pretty difficult.
"We stayed there for about an hour, and really enjoyed the crowd, the enthusiasm and the atmosphere, but didn't manage to see Duncan. Then we thought we'd walk off towards St Katherine's Dock and catch him there later, maybe. As we were walking off the bridge, my husband held up his camera at arm's length above his head over the crowd and pressed the shutter to see if he could get a photo to catch the atmosphere. We missed our marathon man the next time as well, as he must have just gone through by the time we arrived at the next view point. He finished in four hours ten minutes which he was very pleased with and we took photos of him, triumphant with his medal - a memorable day.
When we got the photos back, we were totally amazed to see him quite clearly in the middle of the runners on Tower Bridge. The odds against this happening must be many many thousands to one. The only way I can explain it is telepathy - and family bonds."
