The Numerology of Pegs

Listening to Home Truths, Roberta Anderson thought it was only other people who were off their trollies. Not so. She realised that she, too, was amongst those who must try impose a little order on a chaotic universe...

My husband and I were recently discussing the various oddities thrown up by your programme - especially those relating to what I would call 'eveness'. My closing gambit was that there are certainly some nutty people around and perhaps we shouldn't listen any more! His response was to the effect of 'That's good coming from you!'. Amazed, and a little hurt I asked what he meant and his reply was just one word - 'PEGS'. Oh hell I thought.

It goes like this. Plastic and wooden pegs must not be mixed on any item of washing on the line. I have a set of red, white and blue pegs and these must NOT be mixed on the line. I have a whirly line and items of washing can only be hung out in multiples of 9 and must go red, white, blue around the line. On no account must the odd green peg be used except on an inner ring and then only to peg up hankies. Heavens, writing this all down had made me realise just what a control freak I am. Perhaps this in itself is therapy.

What domestic ritual helps you cope with the ever-present threat of existential chaos? Save yourself huge amounts of money on therapy, and tell us all in the message boards instead...
