A Moving Experience

Barbara Marshall contacted Home Truths to tell us how she came about moving house for the first time at the age of 64.

Barbara was born in the house that she has lived in for 64 years. The cottage was originally owned by Mr & Mrs Laycock, who lived two doors down from the Marshalls, and as a child Barbara can remember taking the rent around to Mr & Mrs Laycock's house.

Barbara first met the Laycocks' daughter Dora when she was a child but their friendship developed after Miss Laycock's parents died and Barbara's mother befriended her. Barbara would take both her mother and Miss Laycock - she never called her Dora - for day trips and evenings out.

Barbara became Miss Laycock's friend and companion after the death of her mother. A friendship that lasted for over 30 years. Miss Laycock moved into a old peoples home following a fall and Barbara was no longer able to give her the care and attention she needed. Barbara continued to visit Miss Laycock each week until she died aged 96.

It came as a pleasant surprise to discover that she had inherited Miss Laycock's cottage, two doors away from her own home. Barbara now faced a huge dilemma: Should she move into Miss Laycock's cottage and sell the family home which she had lived in all her lifeor should she sell Miss Laycock's cottage? A decision that took her two years to make.

"I just did not know if I could leave what I knew as home. In the end I thought Miss Laycock would have wanted me to move into her house - she would be pleased to know that is what I decided to do."

The house move took two weeks to complete.

Barbara did most of the move herself carrying her belongings bit by bit using a wicker basket. "You don't hire a van to move two doors away". She asked her neighbour to help move her bed and wardrobe and sold anything she couldn't take with her.

Barbara says that she is happy with her decision and has no regrets.

"One move is more than enough in 64 years - I don't want to do that again".
