Final Instructions

Martin Booth's mother-in-law is proof that it's the small things that reveal our true state of mind...

My mother-in-law deals with life's peaks and troughs by maintaining an even course through all of them. The birth of a grandchild, the invasion of Kuwait and an announcement that tea is ready receive much the same treatment.

A few years ago she and Pop were invited to visit her brother in Canada. It was to be their first long haul flight and the prospect evidently caused her some concern. The day before the flight she telephoned us to say that, if anything happened to them, there was a tin in the kitchen cupboard with no label - and it was pineapple!

Ever been baffled by another's instructions?

When concerned in a vague way about 'anything happening', what lists do you write for others to carry out?

Leaving your house for others to look after requires information (washing machine, boiler, cat) to pass successfully from owner to sitter. What have been the consequences a misunderstanding concerning the household rule book?
