Check-Out Confusion

Last week Stuart Frais told of his obsession with roaming the aisles of supermarkets in search of bargains, BOGOFS (Buy One Get One Free) emerging as his favourite find. Inspired by Stuart's enthusiasm, Sally Barton confessed how she gave her supermarket's computers a bit of a headache...

"When shopping last week for a barbecue we were holding at our house I found that the rolls were 69p each but on a "buy two for 99p" offer. The reduced counter had the surplus reduced to 40p, but there were lots and it was late so I waited and they were reduced again to 20p.

I promptly bought 8 packs for the princely sum of 4p (69+69=138, but the offer is 2 for 99p so the computer has to take off 39p for every two packs bought to get the 138 down to 99. As I only started by paying 40p for two packs the net cost to me was 1p for two packets).

The only thing is I'm not quite sure if I want you to publicise this in case someone works out how to reprogram the computers."

Too late Sally, it's out now...
