All Aboard!

90-year-old Jessie Meades tells Home Truths her memories of the bus journey of a life time

Three years ago Jessie and her six friends were waiting at the bus terminal after a night out at the Golders Green Hippodrome. Usually, the driver would make the passengers wait outside until he was ready. But not on this occasion. "I suppose you'd all like to sit down then?" he said. After a unison of "yes please", Jessie and co all piled on.

Once seated the driver asked where they'd been that evening. Jessie told him about the concert. The driver then asked the six of them for a rendition to which they duly obliged. The driver then set off with Jessie and friends singing away and any passengers that got on board joining them. Half way to their destination, the driver stopped and said "I'm a bit early so I'll join in" and started singing Danny Boy. Jessie says "We had a lovely, lovely time, and never have I had a trip like that in all my 90 years. It reminded me of the times that we used to all go out on coach outings - before all these posh cars. We would all have a sing song.

After this journey Jessie has never seen the driver again and often wonders what happened to him...

What's your most memorable journey on public transport?
Would you enjoy the kind of impromptu sing-a-long or would it annoy you?
What situations have found yourself in when singing was the only option?
Have you been embarrassed by the singing initiated by friends or family?
