Haxey Hood

Listen to the item

There is a game played once a year on January 6th and it's called Haxey Hood. It's origins are something to do with a medieval event when a lady's hood fell off. Essentially 400 men - two teams drawn from Haxey and the neighbouring village of Westwoodside - form a huge scrum and then they ruck and maul and rake a claw in a manly way for something between four and six hours pausing only for trips to the pub which they call goals.

Dale Smith's family has been involved in the tradition for generations. Ray Kershaw went to find out more about this singular sport.
