Doris and Helen
Belinda's story was reported in the Livepool press

Baby Belinda

Listen to the item

Last week Doris was rightfully proud of the fact that when her baby, Helen, was born three months premature in 1951 - and against all the odds survived - the doctors at the time suggested that this was some sort of medical first for the hospital.

But Mary Gotts ('Belinda' in the newspapers) says she's the real medical first...

"I was born on 1 Sept 1949 in Liverpool, three months early, weighed only 2 lb 3 ounces and dropped to 1 lb 15 ounces. So I precede Doris's baby! I eventually left hospital on the day that I should have been born... It was in the paper because the US were making strong claims about how well they were doing, and they wanted my father to write an article about how well we were doing in UK. The News of the World eventually picked this up as well."
