A cargo ship

Sailing Home

Listen to the item

In 1961, John Reilly was married with one child; he and his wife took the decision to seek their fortune in New Zealand. By 1964 the couple had three children but Mrs Reilly wasn't happy and the couple had agreed before hand that if either didn't take to the new life the whole family would go home to Scotland.

The family went ahead and John set about packing up their possessions and booking his own passage home. Then a friend said "why not work your passage? You'll not only save the fare, you'll earn wages as well" which was how John Reilly, engineer, found himself being taken into the ship's company of the MV Huntingdon.
