Padraic stands behind Sister Louise (left) and Sister George

A new calling

Listen to the item

Padraic Duffy had always hoped to spend his life in the service of God. After deciding to become a teaching brother, his secondary school education was taken care of by the monks. After a while, Padraic decided that he really wanted to become a priest. However in his diocese, such a privilege attracted a charge which his widowed mother was unable to raise. Acting in anger, Padraic abandoned his plans and moved to England where he launched himself into an entirely different world - bingo. Even though he now has a chain of bingo halls his deep religious conviction never really left him and Padraic has developed a very close friendship with nuns from the Jesus and Mary convent near his Felixstowe bingo hall.

Reporter Michael Cleere met Padraic at his bingo hall in Elephant and Castle in South London.
