East End to Africa

Listen to the item

Before taking up his post as a music teacher an East London secondary modern in the early 70s, Tony Stevens was a youth volunteer worker, building roads in the Siskei Homeland in Southern Africa.

In 1977 he took a group of teenagers from Daneford and Haggerston secondary schools in London to Botswana and Lesoto to spend 8 weeks with their African counterparts. The scheme was so successful that he's continued to run it annually for more than 30 years.

Tony, and one of his pupils from that first-ever trip, Andy Ranson, talk about their time in Africa.
