Cathy Wield

Depression

Listen to the item

Back in 1994, Cathy Wield had a successful career working as a doctor in A&E. She was happily married and had 4 young children. But then suddenly she became ill with severe depression. She was forced to give up work and spent the next 7 years in and out of psychiatric hospitals, making various attempts to end her own life and was eventually sectioned.

As a final resort she underwent brain surgery and several days after the operation it was as if a light had been switched on in her head. She suddenly realised she wanted to live and be with her family.

Life After Darkness: A Doctor's Journey Through Severe Depression, Radcliffe Medical Press ISBN: 1857757297
