Sipra and her father

Sipra after the disappearance of her father

Kidnap

Listen to the item

In Spring 2004, Sipra Deb's father called her from the airport to say he was leaving unexpectedly early for a business trip to Assam. She never saw him again.

It took Sipra 18 months of battling with Indian and British bureaucracy before an enquiry was set up into her father's disappearance.

Her father's remains were found and identified and a number of men arrested. In September of this year Sipra's father's ashes were scattered on the Ganges.

It's been a long, hard, sad journey for Sipra and her family, but it has brought her recognition and respect in Assam. Here people understand what dogged determination it takes to pursue the truth in the face of the labyrinthine beaucracy of state.
