Finchden Manor

Listen to the item

Finchden Manor is a therapeutic community for disturbed adolescents. Although no longer open, in its day there were 40 boys, 10 staff, 8 dogs, 4 grand pianos and countless cats and the boys took it in turns to do the cooking and chores.

Peter Paul went to Finchden in the early 50s when "Juvenile Delinquency" was still a novel concept in British society. Around 1970 Alex Priest arrived buffetted by upheaval (as his Royal Marine father moved from posting to posting) and bullied at a succession of schools, Alex had been carrying a great deal of buried anger that began erupting in destructive and antisocial ways.

Alex and Peter tell Tom Robinson, also an ex student, about their time at the manor.
