Janette and Guy at Borth

Guy, Janette and the family at Judy's graduation

New beginnings

Listen to the item

In April 2001 Janette, a young student, was among many Iranian asylum seekers who arrived in Britain after fleeing Iran 's oppressive regime.

Janette had to leave behind her friends and family and abandon her nursing studies. Arriving in Birmingham as an asylum seeker with no prospect of seeing her family again was understandably a lonely time.

But life took a different path and she was introduced to Judy and Guy. They welcomed her into their home in rural Herefordshire where she was able to escape the isolation of her life in Birmingham.

The love that has now grown between the three of them in the last few years contradicts the old adage that blood is thicker than water.

Our reporter Maggie Ayre went to visit them at home.
