Fishing out the baby

When Joe Shaw moved house he unearthed some old newspaper cuttings which took him back to a fateful day, 40 years ago.

In April 1967, 16-year-old Joe was fishing on the River Avon, a tributary of the River Clyde. Suddenly his line snagged on something that looked like an anorak. As he went to have a closer look he saw a pair of corded trousers and a pair of wellingtons. Joe quickly realised that his 'catch' was a child - a little boy who turned out to be a 20-month-old, Sam Rogers. Sam's frantic father had seen what had happened and the boy was taken to hospital where, later on, Joe visited him.

The local papers caught wind of the story, and just for one day, Joe was famous. It was also the day that Joe went to his first Jimi Hendrix concert which convinced him that the guitar was his destiny. It didn't quite work out like that but he did achieve fame of a modest sort with a group called Doll by Doll. They even made the front cover of Melody Maker...
