Kindertransport sisters

Listen to the item

In 1939 a little Jewish girl, Laura Selo, came to Britain. She and her two sisters were sent away from their home in Prague as part of the Kindertransport in which Britain granted refuge to around 10,000 children in Austria, Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia. No such refuge was offered to the parents. Most of the children never saw their parents again.

Laura 's father escaped to Britain and died in 1946, but Laura never saw her mother again and later discovered that she'd died in a concentration camp.

The girls were taken in by a Miss Harder who ran a tobacconists and sweet shop in North London . Although the sisters were only with her for six months, Laura says the memory of that time has remained a beacon of light in her life.

Laura talks to David Stafford about her memories of that traumatic time.
