Yvonne (right) and her sister | |
| | Half Japanese

 Listen to the item
Yvonne has only the haziest knowledge of her family background. She was only two when she effectively lost everyone. Her parents, who weren't married, disappeared early on in World War II.
She reckons she had as many as seven half brothers and sisters from her parents' previous liaisons but they too have played little or no part in her life. She has one full sister with whom she remains close, not least because of what happened to them in childhood.
During and after the war, the two girls grew up in a succession of childrens' homes. It was clear from early on that the two of them were regarded by those in charge as somehow 'different'. They were never told why.
Yvonne tells Jenny Eclair how she was nearly grown-up before she discovered what it was all about - her father was Japanese.
