Evelyn McNicol
Evelyn

Himalayan climber

Listen to the item

Evelyn McNicol likes doing the sorts of things that make her own children worry about what Mum might be getting up to. They have good reason; in October this year Evelyn is joining a multi-national expedition to the Himalayas.

The expedition's aim is to reach a peak which has only ever been climbed once before in 1955 by Evelyn and her friends, Monica Jackson and Betty Stark. And to this day the record states their team is the only one to have successfully summited Gell-jen Peak.

Evelyn won't actually climb the mountain this time, but she talks to Jenny Eclair about how it all began and why she is returning to Himalayas.
