In 1960 Susanne Hall was a busy mother who worked part-time, but in the fortuntate position of being able to afford to employ a nanny. The nanny she found was Mary Church who turned out to be something of a Mary Poppins figure, except that she stayed on even after the children had grown up. She lived in her own cottage and remained the much-loved and indispensable linchpin of Hall family life.

Then in 1987, Mary Church told Susanne a long-kept secret that threw the importance of their friendship into sharp relief. Susanne tells David Stafford how this revelation came about...
